Do Tattoos Hurt

A tattoo is an idelible mark made on a person’s body, usually indelible ink is inserted into the dermis, to change the skin pigment. The art of tattoing is very popular across the world. It is usually done for beauty, as part of fashion, as a sign of a particular class and as a sign of loyalty to a specific person with whom the tattoed individual is in a romantic relationship.

Five types of tattoes are currently recognised. Traumatic tattoos are the result of injuries on asphalt rubbing onto a wound accidentaly. Amateur and professional tattoos are the most common types. They are done with the help of a tattoist (professional) or a layman (amateur). These are deliberately done as a sign of loyalty to a lover, as a rite of passage, as a sign of spiritual devotion and a sign of courage, among others. Cosmetic tattoes are done primarily for beauty, usually to enhance the aesthetic appeal of eyebrows, eyes and lips. Medical tattoes are done either to pass on a medical message about the wearer i.e as a mark of a rare blood group or a special illness, they are also done as treatment of vitiligo to cover the area of discoloration.

A prospective tattoo client often worries whether they will feel pain during the procedure. So do tattoos actually hurt? The answer to this question is not a straight forward “yes” or “no”. People differ remarkably in their tolerance of pain. People with good pain tolerance may not feel pain at a level where those with poor tolerance feel excruciating pain. They issue of pain really depends so much on the individual being tattooed. At the end of the day, it must be admitted that there is some level of pain to be felt during a tattoo though the intensity is relative. Several people who have undergone the procedure describe the feeling to be like a hot scratch or just annoying. Other people say that it doesn’t hurt wheras some have described their experience to be like being pierced by a needle repeatedly. Yet there are also others who say that there is minimal pain which is quite brief.

Do tattoos hurt? The answer to this question although relative as discussed above, is yes, just a little bit. The pain is not serious at all and cannot deter an individual from a tattoo. The benefits of the tattoo often outweigh the pain. The amount of pain sensation also varies depending on the site, size and skill of the tattoist in addition to an individual’s pain tolerance. Many tattoes become irritating during healing when they sometimes become itchy. Very large tattoes can hurt more, so it is advisable for such to be done in stages, a small bit at a time.

The placement of a tattoo on the body remarkably influences whether pain is felt or not. In general, tattoos on bones or adjacent to nerves will hurt. Tattoos in the following areas will hurt, along the collar bone, ankles, spine and nape of the neck. Tattoos on fleshy parts of the body will not hurt as much. In response to the fear of pain, numbing creams are available for use on the tattoo site.
